The John Fisher DH race series will assist in the purchase of a handicapped accessible van for my friend of 30years, John Fisher.
On January 22, 2007 the headlines read: “A three-time national mountain biking champion from Oakhurst broke his neck in a downhill skiing accident Saturday at Sierra Summit. John Fisher, 42, fractured a cervical vertebrae as a result of a slow speed crash near the bottom of the mountain while on is way to meet three family members for lunch…A fixture in the local cycling community, John Fisher grew up in Fresno and Clovis and attended Clovis West High…”
As I read the headlines I could not believe my eyes, as John was an incredible athlete. A three time downhill national champion in the expert class, John went on to finish second at the 2006 UCI World Mountain Biking Championships in British Colombia.
One of the most difficult aspects of John’s life is the lack of transportation. John’s twin girls are now 4 years old and much like their father, they share a great passion for the outdoors. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult for John to be transported as his power wheelchair weighs over 300 pounds. When John is transported by friends or family (using his manual wheelchair) it is always a risk transferring him from the wheel chair to the car and back. With John’s severe paralysis he is unable to assist in these transfers and is totally dependent upon the person or persons helping and guiding him into place. I have assisted with many of these transfers and I am always concerned with John’s safety. John has been through so much over the past two years, and life as a quadriplegic is a huge challenge. His friends and family are doing as much as they can to assist John on a daily basis and continue to provide moral support through the many twists and turns of this horrific injury. Please help me in joining together with our community to help a great friend !
The John Fisher DH Summer Sizzle Series, promoted by JP Sickler with Sick Promotions, will donate 50% of the race proceeds. In addition, we will be selling raffle tickets to raise extra funds. Raffle prizes will included: parts, clothing, signed jerseys from other top riders and at the series final we will raffle off a top of the line Down Hill bike.
Please take a few moments to look over our proposal and see what you can do to help a fellow mountain biker. Don’t be afraid to offer what you can as every little bit will help in meeting this goal to give John and his twins a better life !
Thank you for your time,
JP Sickler; Sick Promotions
